Gabapentin is used as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial seizures and the management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by herpes zoster). It is approved for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia. Gabapentin enacarbil, a prodrug of gabapentin, is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe primary restless legs syndrome. This can also be used "off-label" to help reduce hot flashes in menopausal women.
